Self Defence is all about learning how to use and move your body, not just if you are attacked but in everyday life and work too
Only a handful of the club members can do the splits! Stretching is a very good all round exercise. Which helps with balance, control and injury prevention. So NO, you don't need to be able to do the splits to do TKD
Fitness is important to be good at Self Defence. Being fit , you will find you react much faster
