Unprofessional, staff have no cares about other members of staff or the people they care for, I was a carer here for some time ,I had a motorbike accident whilst at work and sprained my ankle and badly bruised and injured ,burns to my hands and knees but they rang me the next day after explaining asking if ide come in for a bonus ! I had another motorbike accident whilst working and wasn't believed so a manager came out as it was 2 min drive from the office to see if I was telling the truth ,seen me Injured waiting for an ambulance yet still get rang that same week asking to come in, I was pressured into coming back to work to soon ,had my assessment for coming back to work and was assessed as not ready which I knew it I kept saying I wasn't ready but was basically threatened with loosing my job, staff speak so horrible of the people they care for it actually makes me sick, the pay is poor for what rhey have you doing, send you into double up calls on your own! Don't pay enough travel cost, give you no breaks or travel time

I have been with Birchwood for almost 3 years. I have been fortunate enough to work in many positions within the company, giving me experience in many fields. Most enjoyably I have been working out caring. Meeting all the clients and staff. I have made many friends within the company and thoroughly enjoy what I do. Helping people to maintain their independence and making them smile is so rewarding. Although the days can be long it’s very worthwhile. The company always take on board my opinions and any issues I may find are quickly rectified. Pros - Friendly staff, flexible hours, not a bad wage. Cons - Sometimes long days.

I have been part of this company for 11 years, with being a carer and having care provided for my mum. The carers are brilliant. We all gain a real relationship with our clients they truly become friends. Although there may be issues with call times occasionally this is usually out of our control and we do as much as we can to avoid. Iv always been able to voice any concerns to management with them doing what they can to help. No company is perfect but I wouldn't be here for this long unless I enjoyed my job and was happy with the company.

All the carers we have experienced over the years we have been using Birchwood have been excellent. Very friendly very competent and very well trained. Unfortunately Birchwoods communication with its clients and internal & external staff is pretty appalling. We have countless examples of leaving messages that never get passed on, voicemails that never get listened to and generally just poor communication overall. We always let them know if my dad is not going to be at home for any reason (hospital visits/holidays/respite) the amount of times that carers have turned up when they shouldn’t have is unacceptable. Surely we now have the technology and communication to make sure that mistakes like this aren’t made.

Pros. •Friendly staff. •Good training; thorough and all of the training managers are approachable. •The clients are lovely. Cons. •You only get paid for your time at a client’s house - not per hour. •They advertise at £10 an hour but this only applies after 8pm or on weekends, the rest of the time it’s minimum wage. •You are given unrealistic travel times between clients, both if you’re a walker or a driver. •They only pay half your petrol money back. •They will constantly text you to work, even when you’re on holiday. •Double check holiday requests as they are often ‘misplaced’. •Most days involve 12/16 hours with little to no breaks at all. •Lack of communication is horrific. •For a company that promotes person-centred care, they do nothing but treat you as a number.
