Mick the Hat and his wife Jean run a proper pub – a place of excellent beer and good conversation.

The pub is an irreplaceable rural gem with one simply appointed bar. It is a pub for conversations that eddy and swirl around the small main bar, punctuated only by the laughter of customers.

The pub is listed in CAMRA’s National Inventory of pub interiors of outstanding historic interest as being one of fewer than 250 pubs left in Britain to have an interior of outstanding heritage, untouched by developers.

Nominated as a finalist in the North Oxfordshire CAMRA Pub of the Year 2016.

LOCAL COMMUNITY

The pub has no hand pumps and all the Hook Norton draught real ales are poured directly from casks with drinkers served through a hatch in the wall. Mick’s skill in looking after beer has been rewarded with a listing in CAMRA’S Good Beer Guide.

The food is simple – fresh bread rolls normally with a choice of cheese, ham or beef fillings. The pub’s bar is for adults only but children are welcomed in the garden. Dogs are not permitted.

The pub is widely used by groups of walkers, CAMRA branches and local shoots.

Stopped at the Peyton for a few pints of ‘Hooky’ the night before a veterans ride to the National Memorial Arboretum. Very welcoming traditional pub with a landlord who can only be described as a true legend. Thanks for looking after us.

Great discovery. A pub from the past serving a beautiful pint of Hook Norton Bitter. Very warm welcome from Mick the landlord. If you're planning a walk around the Tusmore/Stoke Lyne/Hardwick area you should include a stop here.

Went into a busy bar at 7:15 on a Saturday evening and asked for a pint to be told I’d be lucky to get a drink as “we close at 7:00”!

This one of the last old pubs untouched by time, somewhere which should be on everyone's "to visit" list
