The worst years of my life. I was bullied from the first year and to the last, while those in charge at the school did little to nothing to combat it, other than suggest putting me in a different school. My confidence and self-esteem were lost, and my grades suffered as a result. Although support was given to attempt improving my work, care for my mental wellbeing was neglected. I was treated as a troublemaker [if be it a criminal] and felt like only a number in their system. As a result, I became withdrawn in the years I should’ve been flourishing educationally as a youth. Art, one of few classes I enjoyed became intolerable due to creativity being condensed into drawing shelves [I wish I could be joking when I said that] P.E was difficult in working in teams due to bullying, but perhaps worst was the teacher on one of the coldest winters having us jog around the playground the entire session in shorts and T-shirts which were not suitable for students in that low a temperature. The nurse at the school was insensitive to my issues in the early months of starting my period, and accused me of making myself vomit in the bathroom when the pains from my cramps became so bad they made me ill. Furthermore when having a nose blood, the nurse insisted upon me leaning my head back, which is entirely the wrong thing to do. I understand working in that environment can be challenging, but her attitude at the time disgusted me that I didn’t feel I could rely on her for help. My English and Child.D teachers however were Saints and I could never say a wrong thing about them. They were the nicest people, and although they couldn’t help me through my struggles, their kindness and praise is what I remember fondly of them most. But sadly the damage was done. I left school with poor grades, unable to communicate socially and unable to express myself. I was a vegetable. Years on I still suffer PSTD to where I cannot be in social situations, especially those that remind me of a school environment—college or uni were triggers of anxiety and stress for this reason. It is only through Adult Community College and being in a pleasant, less stressful environment, I was treated as an individual by teachers who believed in my potential. I’ve improved my grades, gained qualifications and steadily over the years through support, therapy and medication, my mental health has improved and I feel more alive than I ever have. I’m no longer that scared isolated child anymore my time at Sheffield High School broke me down to. 0/10 wouldn’t recommend
