St. Christopher’s

The church of St. Christopher is in the centre of the village, and it is our aim that it should be a focal point for parishioners and all members of the community.

Reverend Stewart Gibbs is the Minister/Priest for St Christopher’s. Stewart is also in charge of the neighbouring parish of High Ongar.
Various members of the worshiping church also lead Family Services from time to time. The services in our monthly cycle are styled to provide something for everybody and there is a service of Holy Communion in at least one church in the benefice every Sunday.

The services for St Christopher’s are a follows.

1st Sunday in every month is Holy Communion at 9.30am, led by Reverend Gibbs.
2nd Sunday of every month is Evensong at 6pm, led by Reverend Gibbs.
4th Sunday of every month is a Family Service at 9.30 am, led by Reverend Gibbs.

Refreshments are served after morning services affording the opportunity to socialise.

We extend a warm welcome to all and especially children, to our family services where they can take part in activities set out in the North Isle.
We also welcome groups of visitors, typically U3A’s, for whom we offer guided tours and talks about the two churches.

For Services, Weddings, Funerals and Pastoral Matters, please contact Reverend Stewart on 01277366047 .

St. Christopher’s is committed to providing a safe and caring place.  If you have any concerns please Click here for contact details.

St. Christopher’s participated in the 2022 Heritage Open Days with special displays on a theme of  Astounding Inventions. The sad death of Her Majesty the Queen was announced on the 8th September. After careful consideration HOD proceeded in a respectful manner.
For a record of the villages mourning and the Open Days Displays weekend, please click on the Heritage Open Days link in the right hand toolbar.

We are delighted that services have resumed. For extra events, please click on the ‘Events’ calendar at the top of the page.

We now have the facility to accept contactless donations in church and a QR code for remote donations.

It is thought that in the C14th the village flourished as a result of the woollen industry. Rather than pull down the existing St Andrews and All Saints to build a larger one the D'Espania family retained it and the D'Ou family built a new one on the same consecrated land. This occurrence of two churches in one churchyard is unique in Essex but there are six other examples in the country - Swaffham Prior - Cambridgeshire, Trimly -Suffolk, Alvingham - Lincolnshire, Reepham - Norfolk, South Walsham - Norfolk andEvesham - Worcestershire. The church is not normally open to visitors particularly in the winter!
