We are still keeping in touch with each other and if you would like to be part of the regular 'update on Church matters' please email [email protected]. Roger would also love to hear from you if you would like to share in our emailed Sunday service, ask for prayer or if you just need to talk to someone. We do not currently have a vicar, but we are currently working with our neighbouring churches in Hathersage and Grindleford to recruit one and hope to have someone in place before the end of the year.

God bless you and keep you safe and well.

A bit of history

Our Church is the only church in Derbyshire designed by the famous gothic architect, William Butterfield, who designed many churches and chapels notably St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral, Melbourne Australia, Keble College Oxford and Rugby School.

The Church is delicate and slender. The spire reaches high into the sky and inside there is a feeling of great space and airiness; the long chancel is slightly non-rectangular which increases the impression of length. The whole interior was designed by Butterfield giving a harmonious feeling to the building. Built in 1860 by the Moore family, who owned Bamford Mill, the church still has a direct descendant of the Moore’s as its patron. Originally the Parish Church of the village, it became St John the Baptist, Bamford with Derwent when the Derwent dams were built and Derwent and Ashopton villages submerged in the 1940s; then in 1999 Bamford became part of a joint benefice with Hathersage; in 2007 the benefice was further expanded to include Grindleford.

Safeguarding

Protecting children, young people and vulnerable adults is the responsibility of us all, whether they are in the communities in which we live or part of our Christian family. To report a safeguarding concern, please contact Derby Diocese or our Parish Safeguarding Officer, Pat Brunskill (details below).

St John's Church, down the hill on the way out of Bamford is a small parish church built between 1856 and 1860. Its a relatively simple construction, slim and tall with very attractive rose windows on both the East and West ends. Inside, there is a lean-to North aisle attached to the nave, all containing rather low back pews. The pews also feature collections of knitted cushions, featuring Yorkshire roses and other religious symbols. During the training for Operation Chastise in July 1942, the Dam Busters practised on the Derwent reservoirs. Due to its proximity to Ladybower Dam, the pilots used the spire of St John's for navigating their Lancasters.
