About our churches

Morton, Stonebroom and Shirland are rural parishes containing several diverse villages in attractive border country just a “stone’s throw” from the Derbyshire Peak District.

The three Church of England parishes are linked together to form a United Benefice, and are a distinct Mission and Ministry Area of Derby Diocese.

Holy Cross Church, Morton

Holy Cross Church Morton is a beautiful and tranquil old church in a peaceful, rural churchyard setting where prayers have been said for over 1000 years.

The church supported by an active congregation, provides a lively social heart in the village alongside a lovely prayerful worship space.  We try to be a friendly, inclusive and welcoming place that gives children a high priority.  A warm welcome is offered to all who come along to our services and events.

St Leonard’s Church, Shirland

St Leonards, the Parish Church of Shirland, is situated in the centre of the village alongside the A61 between Alfreton and Chesterfield.  Recent refurbishment has made the church welcoming for children and young families.  Children are also welcome in our choir which accompanies our worship on Sundays.  One of our main aims is to be beside people at important times in their lives when they bring their children to baptism, when they marry and when they are bereaved.

St Peter’s Church, Stonebroom

The parish church of St. Peter is situated at the bottom of the village, set within a walled, lawned garden.   The atmosphere within the building is of quiet, peace and tranquillity.   Worship, fellowship groups, outreach, particularly within the local schools and taking services for the elderly in their own hall and at a nearby care home are just some of our priorities, as are pastoral care, ecumenical sharing, support for charities, social events and caring for our beautiful building.   St Peter’s offers a warm welcome to everyone.
