Richard Atkins4 StarThe Anchor is a no frills, no nonsense family friendly pub with welcoming atmosphere. Landlord and landlady keep a tight but friendly ship, with a flavour of their Newcastle background.
They have fitted into the village of Kempsey with a very positive outlook and this has endeared them to many locals who are now 'regulars'.
The menu is quite straightforward and manages to cater for a variety of preferences.
On my most recent visit I tried the rump steak (during winter I mostly had the beef casserole which is very tasty too).
My steak was very well cooked in the manner I prefer: medium rare. It had a caramelised surface for added flavour and was pink inside for juicy texture.
It did - as my old mum would say - 'eat well' too!
Texture was very good, especially for the modest price.
I have paid considerably more for steaks less tender and less flavoursome than this!
I was very happy to let both hosts know how much I enjoyed it.
The Anchor also make and serve very good pizzas, cooked in a proper, outdoor, pizza oven.
A large, covered, outdoor eating area plus a grassy garden make it ideal for family visits, particularly on any nice days.
Yes; I shall be back for another steak before long.Friday 20th May 2022
Lee Botton5 StarNice atmosphere and brilliant guy in charge. Portions are pretty huge and all really tasty. One ingredient was missing but the problem was more than made up for by the substitution offer. Well kept beer as well. Great find and glad we picked this one to visit.Friday 18th October 2019
Keith Jackson4 StarOur welcome was friendly and warm. The bedroom was reached via an uncovered outside stairway and was clearly part of a recent addition. It was a little small as was the bathroom, but was quite adequate for a one-night stay. The bed was comfortable and clean.
The evening meal was good but the bar was very crowded and several people accidentally bumped into us as we ate, which was not so good. To cool the room the door to the bsr and the outside door were wedged open and this caused a cold draught at our table. I was not allowed to close the door.
Breakfast was good and served quickly.Tuesday 21st June 2022
