Exam Success for TMS Following the publication of national exam results, we are very proud that TMS is now in the top 10 of the highest performing non-selective schools in Kent. I would like to congratulate our staff and students for this incredible achievement. The main measure of school performance is Progress 8 and this represents the average grade achieved across 8 different subjects for all students. Our Progress 8 score from the summer results is 0.02. This is above both the Kent average of -0.19 and the national average of -0.03- these figures also include grammar and other selective schools. Local MP Tom Tugendhat visited The Malling School on Friday 7th October On Friday morning during his visit to TMS, Tom Tugendhat (MP) took the time to speak to our sixth form regarding a range of issues including his time in Afghanistan, the cost of living crisis, Education and the War in Ukraine. He also offered some words of encouragement to the founders of the new school debating society and kindly offered to return as a referee for a future debate. The students found him extremely informative and were very grateful for his time. We would also like to thank Tom for facilitating a recent student trip to parliament. After meeting with our sixth form students Tom then went on to tour the rest of the school. He met with several of our students, teachers, and support staff, dropping in on many of the different lessons taking place. We were very proud to showcase the great teaching, caring approach from staff and positive learning atmosphere in every classroom we visited. We would like to thank Tom for giving up his time to see us at TMS and very much look forward to a return visit. We are pleased to announce that Merlin has gained his Gold Award and is now our fully qualified Dog Mentor. Since starting his mentoring journey Merlin has proved to be a positive and calming influence on our students. Part of his role is to meet and greet anxious and new pupils in the morning. During the school day Merlin also works with a number of students developing their confidence, resilience, communication skills and general well being. Well done Merlin. A fantastic achievement! GCSE & KS5 BEST RESULTS EVER! The Malling School has celebrated another successful year of GCSE and Key Stage 5 outcomes with the best data ever recorded. Students were welcomed into the school to collect their examination results and this was the first time since 2019 that they could celebrate results from official exams rather than teacher assessed grades. GCSE This year saw the return of external exams and the students have been rewarded with excellent grades across all subjects. There has been a significant increase in the number of students who achieved strong passes in both English and Maths. English Baccalaureate and options subjects achieved exceptional results with students exceeding their potential. Individual successes include Skye Pinder who achieved five grade 9s and four grade 8s, Ashley Lunn with three 9s, two 8s, one 7 and two 6s. Both students are returning to The Malling School in September to form part of the first cohort studying the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The school is incredibly proud of these excellent results which are a true reflection of the determination, dedication and support from students, parents/carers and teachers. KEY STAGE 5 The significantly oversubscribed Sixth Form continues to deliver excellent results for their students through the International Baccalaureate Career-Related Programme and bespoke Level 2 curriculum. IB Computing and BTEC Performing Arts proved to be areas of strength with excellent value-added scores, along with IB Biology, Geography, History, Maths, Psychology, Film and BTEC Art who all achieved positive value added. Overall, the school achieved an average academic grade of C+ and average vocational grade of Distinction. All students leave Year 13 with a meaningful destination, including 27 students going to university to study subjects ranging from computing and cyber security to ancient history, the arts and physiotherapy. Destinations include the University of Nottingham, London School of Economics, York and Newcastle University. We also bid farewell to students leaving to join the Armed Forces, apprenticeships, and supported internships. Amongst the many individual successes are Alicia Muir who secured the equivalent of 5 A* grades at A level and Sophie Stone who has secured a 'Future Engineers' apprenticeship with Amazon.
